Abstract:
|
Conference conversations are often brief, unplanned, and informal, yet they can leave advising professionals energized, inspired, and professionally transformed. Drawing on research on weak ties (Granovetter, 1973) and contemporary scholarship on networking challenges in higher education (Nightingall & Baxter, 2024), this session explores how casual 'pickup meetings' can generate meaningful professional learning and collaboration. Using the podcast The Pickup Meeting as a living example, presenters examine how curiosity, listening, humor, and shared humanity create trust and spark innovation in advising practice. Participants will reflect on how informal interactions at conferences, on campuses, and in virtual spaces can extend learning beyond scheduled sessions and formal structures. The session offers practical strategies for recreating pickup meetings locally to support mentoring, peer learning, and sustained professional engagement. Attendees will leave with an actionable plan to implement. |
