Abstract:
|
Advising is often the first place that many students turn when they feel uncertain, overwhelmed, or unsure of their next step. One conversation with an academic advisor has the power to change a student's entire academic journey. Institutional data indicate that students who attended at least one advising appointment were retained or graduated at a 70% rate compared to 34% for students who did not visit advising. Given this impact, intentional advisor training and professional development are essential. This session explores practical strategies for onboarding advisors, so they feel confident navigating institutional guidelines, curriculum requirements, and campus systems while serving as trusted, credible resources. We will also discuss how intentionally building community among advisors strengthens their own connection and sense of purpose, improving advisor and student retention as well as student outcomes. |
