Abstract:
|
Despite significant educational attainment, African American women (AAW) remain underrepresented in senior higher education leadership roles. While research suggests that adversity can foster leadership development, few studies have examined the lived experiences, adaptive capacity, and leadership development of AAW in these positions. This presentation shares findings from a phenomenological study exploring the crucible experiences of African American women in senior higher education leadership at institutions in the southeastern United States. The presentation highlights crucible experiences that fostered resilience, the challenges participants encountered, and the influence of these experiences on their leadership journeys. Participants will engage in guided reflection, small-group discussion, and practical application by drafting an institutional leadership development practice that supports equitable and transformative leadership development. |
