Abstract:
|
Academic advising administrators are frequently expected to lead teams, manage change, and influence institutional strategy, yet they often receive limited mentoring tailored to their leadership transition. While mentoring for advisors is widely discussed, the mentoring needs of advising administrators themselves remain underexplored. Turnover across advising roles, combined with leadership transitions that occur without structured support, contributes to burnout, role ambiguity, and leadership instability that can ultimately affect advisor retention and the student experience.
This session examines the hidden curriculum of advising leadership and explores how mentoring, coaching, and sponsorship support administrator effectiveness and sustainability. Participants will reflect on their mentoring needs across leadership stages and identify practical strategies to build intentional mentoring relationships and networks. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of mentoring as a leadership support strategy and actionable approaches to strengthen their professional growth and long-term leadership trajectory. |
