Abstract:
|
Academic advisors play a vital role in guiding students on their journey to self-authorship. As students progress through their curricula, external dependency develops into an internal drive that then informs the students' decisions. This development can be explained through three critical dimensions of self-authorship: cognitive, intrapersonal, and interpersonal. Through these dimensional shifts, students come to construct meaning and build relationships that begin to reflect their personal identity. Advisors can play a vital role in students' growth towards self-authorship by exploring, questioning, and challenging students to think critically about these decisions. In this session, we will deconstruct how Violet Sorrengail from the book Fourth Wing learns to trust her decisions by navigating the dimensions of self-authorship and show how advisors can help foster this growth in their students with accessible techniques and conversations. |
