Abstract:

Academic advisors guide students and families through the college transition every day, but what happens when the advisor is also the parent of a college student? This interactive, lighthearted panel explores the intersection of personal and professional identities, examining how advising and parenting one's own child reshapes advising philosophy, deepens empathy, and strengthens relational practice. Grounded in developmental and relational advising theory, panelists will share candid reflections on balancing professional expertise with parental emotion, navigating boundaries, and applying advising approaches at home. Through storytelling, scholarship, and guided reflection, participants will consider how their own life roles influence advising interactions and leadership. Attendees will leave with practical strategies for engaging families with empathy, articulating a refined advising philosophy, and integrating personal growth into ongoing professional development. |
