Abstract:
|
Conversations about academic standing are among the most challenging advising interactions, requiring advisors to navigate high emotion, complex student circumstances, and institutional accountability. Grounded in Bloom et al.'s Appreciative Advising framework, this interactive workshop explores effective strategies for engaging students on academic probation in ways that are honest, strength-based, and empowering. Through facilitated dialogue that draws on the collective expertise in the room, participants will examine advising scenarios and be given the opportunity to practice asking non-threatening, reflective questions that uncover challenges without reinforcing shame. The session emphasizes balancing empathy with accountability, affirming student strengths while addressing academic patterns, and supporting students in designing realistic next steps. Attention will also be given to advisor self-awareness, institutional barriers, and opportunities to more fully integrate Appreciative Advising practices into academic standing conversations. |
