Title: HOT TOPIC - Finding your Advising Ikigai: Designing a Purpose-Driven Practice for Sur-Thrive-al
Lead Presenter: Rebecca Helms
Date: December 31, 1969    Time: 6:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Room:
Abstract: HOT TOPIC: As higher education advisors face burnout, shifting expectations, and reduced agency, many are focused not just on surviving, but on thriving. This session centers ikigai as a framework for advisor sur-'thrive-'al-meeting in the middle between endurance and renewal, people and purpose, reality and possibility. Participants will move beyond a surface understanding of ikigai to explore habits that support wellbeing, meaning, and sustainable engagement in advising work. Through guided reflection and collaborative whiteboarding, attendees will identify how their passions, strengths, institutional needs, and compensation intersect. The session highlights small, practical actions that help advisors reconnect with purpose, foster belonging, and create pathways from survival toward long-term thriving and retention.
