Abstract:
|
The numeric value of a GPA often determines whether a student faces suspension, probation, or reinstatement, making GPA-focused advising conversations high-stakes and complex. Advisors must balance institutional GPA standards with a student's academic history, capacity, and goals. This session demonstrates how a customizable, Excel-based GPA calculation tool can be used to prepare and guide these conversations by supporting advisor learning across NACADA's Conceptual, Informational, and Relational domains. Participants will examine anonymized transcript data and GPA scenarios to distinguish what is numerically possible from what is more realistically probable within a given semester. By visually modeling GPA outcomes, advisors can ground conversations in accurate data while maintaining empathy and student-centered communication. Participants will leave with practical strategies and a transferable tool to confidently facilitate transparent, realistic GPA conversations that promote informed decision-making and academic recovery. |
