Abstract:
|
U.S. higher education is facing federal, state, and local legislation designed to restrict diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Since 2023, more than 65 anti-DEI bills have been introduced, aimed at limiting or dismantling DEI-related programs and practices. Students of color are disproportionately affected, reporting increased stress and withdrawal from their institutions as a result.
In this interactive session, participants will develop a clearer understanding of the current anti-DEI legislative landscape and its implications for advising practice. Attendees will engage in guided discussions on their institutional contexts and supporting students of color within a shifting policy landscape. The session will review current research and highlight culturally responsive advising strategies that foster belonging. Participants will leave with practical tools and actionable approaches to uphold equity, advocate for students of color, and strengthen inclusive advising practices. |
