Abstract:
|
Many students arrive at college having excelled throughout high school, only to feel overwhelmed when they receive their first low grade. For these students, academic performance is often deeply tied to identity, confidence, and a sense of belonging. This session equips academic advisors with strategies to support students navigating this transition. We will explore how differences in rigor between high school and college contribute to these challenges, examine common emotional and behavioral responses, and discuss advising approaches that validate students' experiences while promoting resilience and skill-building. Advisors will leave with concrete language, reflective questions, and practical tools to help students reframe setbacks as growth opportunities and develop healthier coping and learning strategies. This session emphasizes supportive, developmentally focused advising that strengthens persistence and academic confidence. |
