Abstract:
|
Learning new ways of understanding academic advising theories can be implemented from more than just traditional formats in professional development and student scenarios. One such way is through the use of popular culture. Academic advisors and higher education professional development can use analysis of popular culture to teach new ways of understanding academic advising theories and approaches. This poster session associates the 1984 film, The Karate Kid through the lens of the Appreciative Advising approach. Through specific scenes and characterizations in the film, The Karate Kid displays the six phases practiced in Appreciative Advising through a teenager learning life lessons from the guidance of his mentor. Implications of popular culture and narrative approaches in professional development training are also explored. |
