Abstract:
|
Advisors and student-support professionals often face conversations with students that are emotionally charged, high-stakes, or uncertain-moments that can influence trust, engagement, and student success. This interactive session equips participants with practical strategies to navigate these conversations with empathy, clarity, and confidence. Attendees will explore communication frameworks such as SBI (Situation-Behavior-Impact), DESC (Describe-Express-Specify-Consequences), and LARA (Listen-Affirm-Respond-Add) to guide student-centered dialogue. Through realistic case scenarios, small-group discussion, and role-play exercises, participants will practice de-escalating tension, maintaining professional boundaries, and using intentional language. By the end of the session, participants will leave with actionable tools and strategies they can immediately apply to strengthen advising relationships, foster student growth, and transform challenging interactions into opportunities for connection and learning. |
