Abstract:

The relational component of advising emphasizes the importance of building a positive working relationship with each student (Gordon et al., 2008). Advising appointments often become conversations that are critical to a student's success. This presentation explores how advisors can navigate these high-stakes conversations while maintaining and strengthening those relationships. Drawing on Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High (Grenny et al., 2021), the session introduces practical strategies for structuring effective conversations. These strategies can be used to plan ahead or implemented when a conversation takes an unexpected turn. |
