Abstract:
|
In the Appreciative Advising model, reaching the Dream, Design, and Deliver phases can be challenging as appointments often focus on immediate problem-solving. Yet these phases are critical for helping students set goals and persist. Research shows students are more likely to persist when they identify goals and connect learning to them (Caspar, 2014-2015). This session introduces concept mapping as a structured tool to support goal setting and academic planning. Originally developed for classroom use, this approach can also be adapted for one-on-one advising, orientation, or pre-advising reflection. Grounded in Appreciative Advising, concept mapping helps students clarify connections between interests, strengths, and goals. Attendees will gain practical strategies to implement concept mapping and support students in making connections and persisting. |
