Abstract:
|
Advisors seek to promote autonomy, growth, and trust in their students while managing emotional labor and competing priorities. This interactive presentation integrates Autonomy-Supportive Advising (ASA) and Motivational Interviewing (MI), two complementary frameworks that strengthen advisorestudent interactions. ASA emphasizes shared responsibility, choice, and collaboration, while MI offers practical communication strategies that support autonomy by eliciting students' own motivations for change. After a brief overview of each framework, participants will work in small groups to role-play common advising scenarios. Rotating among the roles of student, advisor, and observer, they will practice using MI strategies to listen for and evoke change talk while recognizing the fixing reflex. Participants will also engage in guided self-reflection to examine stress responses, system pressures, and overfunctioning. Participants will leave with practical ASA and MI strategies that promote student autonomy and advisor self-regulation. |
