Abstract:
|
This presentation explores how new and experienced academic advisors can create a developmentally supportive framework to better serve today's diverse student population, including neurodivergent students, racial and ethnic minorities, and LGBTQIA+ individuals. Grounded in Schlossberg's Transition Theory, the session will provide actionable steps to foster a welcoming, safe, and accessible advising environment. Advisors will learn strategies for creating inclusive office spaces, improving population-conscious communication, and intentionally seek while sensitively respond to student feedback. Through student testimonials and interactive discussions, participants will gain insights into the unique challenges faced by marginalized students and develop practical tools to enhance their advising practices. This session emphasizes equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), aiming to ensure all students feel supported in their advising environment. |
