Abstract:
|
Federal financial aid is critical for many college students, particularly first-generation and low-income learners, yet the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policies that govern eligibility are often complex and difficult to navigate. This study evaluates the clarity, accessibility, and usability of SAP communication at four public universities and compares them to a practitioner-developed best-practice model. Using a heuristic rubric grounded in plain language, usability, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL), this mixed-methods analysis examines website content, appeal instructions, and institutional support resources. Findings reveal significant gaps in appeal procedure clarity, accessibility, and student support across institutions, highlighting risks to students' academic continuity and financial stability. Recommendations include adopting student-centered language, UDL-aligned formatting, transparent timelines, and practitioner involvement to enhance equity and student success. |
