Abstract:
|
This presentation examines how need-supportive advising contexts, grounded in Self-Determination Theory (SDT), can foster first-year students' self-authorship during major exploration and selection. Major choice is often made under conditions of limited self-knowledge and heightened external pressure, leading many students to rely on extrinsic, "earner" motivational pathways rather than intrinsic, "learner" orientations. Drawing on SDT and complementary perspectives on self-authorship and career development, the session frames major selection as a developmental process shaped by motivation, identity, and advising relationships. Through brief, scripted advising scenarios situated across the first year, participants analyze motivational cues, identify unmet psychological needs, and consider timely advising interventions. Advisors will learn theory-informed, practical strategies to support students' needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, helping them internalize decisions and confidently author academic choices aligned with their values, interests, skills, and long-term goals. |
