Abstract:
|
As of 2022, an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants reside in the United States, with 70% belonging to mixed-status families (Passel and Krogstad). These students face significant legal, financial, and psychological challenges that impact their higher education experience. Approximately 408,000 undocumented students attend college, alongside 141,000 DACA recipients or DACA-eligible students (American Immigration Council). Advisors play a crucial role in supporting these students, addressing both academic and mental health concerns. This session will provide advisors with strategies to foster inclusive environments, recognize signs of distress, and implement best practices informed by student development theory. By enhancing cultural competence and establishing partnerships with mental health partners, advisors can create a more supportive, responsive, and empowering educational experience for mixed-status, undocumented, DACA, and TPS students. |
