Abstract: Why don't students use faculty office hours? Advising to reduce barriers of office hours engagement

Office hours are intended to be a place where students can access support for a course, but are also an amazing place for faculty to engage students in academic and career mentoring. Why then do faculty often experience low turnout in office hours? How can academic advisors help students overcome the barriers associated with using office hours?

We surveyed 1600+ students about their experiences with office hours to uncover specific practices and barriers that enhanced or limited their interest in office hours.

In this presentation, we will use group discussion to explore messaging to help students see the benefits of office hours. We will then share evidence-based recommendations to help mitigate the barriers associated with attending office hours.
