Title: Teaching Critical Thinking: A Guide to Helping Students Make Their Own Decisions
Lead Presenter: Olivia Saunders
Date: December 31, 1969    Time: 6:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Room:
Abstract: During high school, students are told what classes to take, clubs to join, even what they are having for dinner. Without warning, when students are enrolled into college they are immediately asked: what do you want to do? While they may have been asked this before, this time it counts. Suddenly, students are being asked to think for themselves, and they don't know how. This session aims to address the challenge of encouraging independent thinking and empowering students through advising and teaching, in an academic setting where barriers to critical thinking are ever changing. Participants will use hands on activities and discussion to explore techniques such as Motivational Interviewing and Bloom's Taxonomy.
