Abstract:

I Can't Think Straight...and Neither Should Our Students
A growing number of students are beginning their college journey with the expectation that others will think for them. This presentation, delivered by a classroom teacher with over 18 years' experience, will examine both how and why students are hesitant to think while providing effective techniques from within the classroom that can be applied to an advisory setting. Using the framework from Ron Ritchhart's book, 'Creating Cultures of Thinkers', advisors will understand how re-framing time, language, environment, and expectations can help students understand that thinking is not a linear process and can be messy. Experienced advisors will learn a few ways to tweak their current practices, but this is geared primarily for newer advisors who are looking for ways to encourage their students to think. |
