Abstract:

Ethics: The helper's guide to responsible advising practice
Ethical dilemmas are situations wherein there may be more than one course of action, and either action selected may uphold or violate a moral principle. Ethical dilemmas are a part of our daily advising practice, yet advisors may have trouble identifying when such dilemmas exist or articulating how those situations fail to align with the core values of advising. This session will review the importance of ethics to advising practice including its relationship to equitable educational outcomes and advisor retention. Attendees can expect to discuss situational ethical dilemmas, identify the ethical principles at play, and practice identifying concrete steps to arrive at an ethically sound decision. Participants will also consider additional resources to create shared institutional expectations for ethical practice. |
