Developmental & Transactional Advising: Exploring A Healthy Balance
The student experience within higher education is not isolated to a vacuum, and several factors, including their advisor's philosophy on advising, can influence their journey. Advising is most often done from one of two different perspectives: Developmental or transactional. Research has shown that students with a positive advising experience have greater persistence and completion rates (Bettinger & Baker, 2014; Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005). This presentation explores the dynamic interplay between developmental and transactional advising in academic advising practices. It examines the principles of each approach and highlights the importance of finding a healthy balance between relational support and task-oriented guidance. By integrating both models, academic advisors can create a comprehensive advising experience that meets the diverse needs of students, fostering their academic success and holistic development. |
