Abstract: So, what's the plan? Students who are strongly committed to achieving a career goal may be more motivated academically and more likely to persist in their studies. In Fall of 2023, a research study was conducted to examine the effect on retention of utilizing Motivational Interviewing techniques to explore career goals. For this study, advisors engaged in strategic conversations with students related to their specific career goals during academic advisement sessions. These conversations were designed to evoke a renewed sense of direction and promote introspection of individual perspectives. This presentation will provide the background, methodology, and results of this study and discuss the implications for improved practice.
