Unmasking the Hidden Struggles: Supporting Students Who Say They Are Fine But Are Not
As advisors, our genuine concern for students prompts us to ask, 'How are you doing?' To which, we often get the simple response, 'I'm fine.' What happens when we suspect they're not? How can we break through the facade and offer meaningful support? This session will delve into practical strategies and warning signs to help advisors identify students who may be silently struggling, the reasons why students may say they're fine when it is not true, and strategies to encourage a student to be honest about their struggles. Participants will apply the theory of mattering and marginality and learn how to ensure a student knows they matter since this belief can lead to a relationship of trust between the advisor and student, creating better opportunities for open communication. |
