Abstract:
|
This qualitative study investigates the perceptions of academic advising leaders on the implementation of career ladders for primary-role academic advisors. With academic advising identified as one of the top turnover occupations in higher education, and given the critical role of advising in student success, retention, and persistence to graduation, this study explores the factors contributing to the short average career lifespan of primary-role academic advisors. Utilizing semi-structured interviews with seventeen NACADA leaders, we aim to contribute to the discourse on professional development, retention, and the professionalization of advising, highlighting the need for a consistent occupational career ladder in academic advising and the challenges of achieving consensus among advising leaders. |
