Abstract:

Empowering First-Generation Student Success through Advisor-Driven Campus Connections:
Entering college can be overwhelming for first-generation students seeking campus connection. Academic advisors, the initial point of contact, play a crucial role in connecting first-generation students with campus resources, bridging gaps, and enhancing collegiate experience. While advising focuses on courses and degree plans, first-generation students are unaware of the vast resources that campuses offer. This presentation will illuminate first-generation students' unique challenges and propose solutions through enhanced advising. Our approach integrates advising with various campus resources including disability services, residence life, and career centers. Attendees will gain insights into the experiences of first-generation students and recognize the pivotal role advising plays in supporting this unique population. By extending support beyond traditional roles and collaborating with university-wide efforts, advisors can enhance the college experience for first-generation students. |
