Abstract:
|
Comedian Trevor Noah recently observed that asking a person in this part of the world the question, 'What do you do?' is likely to yield a response about one's job rather than other things that they do or enjoy. That observation illustrates how personal identity can become wrapped up in work and career. Coupled with the understanding of how students' choice of major impacts career outlook, it leads us to ask: How does changing majors challenge students' sense of self? Also, how can we best support students who experience these transitions? Using a multidisciplinary approach, these questions will be explored through perspectives of the social sciences, history, and philosophy to foster discussion of individual and institutional approaches to meeting the needs of major-changing students. |
