Abstract:
|
Re-Imagining Higher Education in a Time of Neoliberalism: A love letter and lament
This paper is one part love letter, because it is within the power of education to be transformative in the private and public domains, like Foucault describes Kant's answer to the question, 'what is Enlightenment?,' and to cultivate an 'ontology of ourselves' that will give rise to a political imaginary (Nancy Fraser) deep enough for the planet and broad enough for the inhabitants of it. But in every love letter there is a kernel of lament, a letter presupposes that one is separated from their beloved. And the truth is, it is getting harder to find the moments of transformation and transcendence working in higher education in this time of neoliberalism (as defined by Wendy Brown). |
