Abstract: I'm Not a Therapist: Helping Advisors Navigate Mental Health First Aid. Advisors are often the first source students feel safe sharing their mental health struggles with or at noticing the signs of distress in students. While referral to mental health services is best practice, students benefit from active listening, as well as helping them identify their own strengths and self-care. The session will help advisors identify how they're already using active listening in their advising sessions and brainstorm with their peers new ways to incorporate mental health support for diverse populations. This session will help advisors apply mental health first aid and leave with strategies to help students navigate their self-care and mental health well-being. It will also incorporate self-care for advisors and helpful ways to recover after offering mental health support to students.
