Abstract:

Can Advising Save the Soul of Higher Education?
Higher education is suffering. Public esteem for its institutions is low; many enrollments are down; public funding has decreased, leading to increased tuition; perhaps as a result, a key metric for institutions and the programs within them is now return-on-investment. For external stakeholders especially, another key metric is graduation rates. The popularity of dual enrollment and other acceleration programs suggests that student and their families value credits and degrees more highly than learning and depth of education. Often, academic advising is seen by administration as a means of reinforcing these trends, implementing them more efficiently. This presentation tries to show how advising can instead be a force for prioritizing learning and depth of education, a counterweight to those metrics, restoring higher education's central mission. |
