Abstract:
|
The same success skill workshops and engagement methods are used across all HEIs. We not only share our successful skill-building curriculum but also our disappointment when our at-risk students do not attend the needed workshops. We attempt to remedy this by altering times and formats, but a closer look at our at-risk populations is needed to find an alternate solution. For example, first-generation students, and/or students of color are often classified as at-risk of retaining. To properly prescribe you must first understand the environmental, cultural, and behavioral factors of that student population. Why? Because through that understanding, your methodology used to create programming will be infused with more targeted and intentional content. Your target audience will not only be marketed to in a way that attracts their attention but the content will be delivered in a way that resonates. Using techniques that have worked at institutions with historically higher populations of at-risk students (HBCUs and community colleges) the presenters will show how their method can be used to support at-risk students at HBCUs and Beyond! |
