Abstract:

What do Academic Advisors and hostage negotiators have in common? Both must use emotionally intelligent communication skills to gain trust, demonstrate empathy and help people remain calm and solve problems. In this interactive presentation participants will learn about core communication skills used by hostage negotiators, consider how those skills might be applied to advising situations, and practice the skills with one another. We will also consider how looking outside the field can help invigorate professional development for advisors. |
