Smiling Similes: The Use of Metaphor in Academic Advising
Your career is a journey. College is a marathon. Final exams are a battle. These are familiar metaphors that advisors encounter every day. Focusing on metaphors, we are seeking to contribute to advising theory and practice along the lines set out by Peter Hagen, who has called for increased attention to how humanities methods contribute to the field. In this workshop, we explore the ways in which metaphors function on our practices as academic advisors. Through a series of small-group exercises, participants will gain an awareness of how metaphors operate in meetings with students. Participants will workshop and start creating a metaphor toolkit of their own guided by a structured but exploratory portion. |
