Abstract:

How to Advise Probationary Students?
Learning from the Success Training for Academic Resiliency (STARLite) Program
Advising probationary students is difficult and requires a unique set of skills and strategies. We, as dedicated and caring advisers, have worked collaboratively with probationary students in the last six years to help them grow and succeed. In this session, we will introduce our STARLite Program including its design and rationale, identify challenges and difficulties, discuss student performance patterns, examine underlying issues, explore effective advising strategies, and share success stories. We will also discuss the theoretical frameworks that guide our work, including the Model of Multiple Dimensions of Identity, Matrix of Domination, Zone of Proximal Development and Scaffolding, and Self-authorship. Participants will be invited to construct knowledge together and identify effective strategies that they can employ in their institutional contexts. |
