Abstract: It's a Beautiful Day for Advising: Reimagining Advising and New Student Onboarding in the First Year

Colleges across the country are embracing Guided Pathways, with advising and new student onboarding taking a central role in increasing student success. This session will discuss how a small community college has used the principles of Guided Pathways, specifically the Ask-Connect-Inspire-Plan (Jenkins & Lahr, 2022) framework, to inform their advising and new student onboarding redesign work and share the positive impact these practices are having on retention and persistence. Topics include caseload management, holistic student supports, use of technology, enhancing new student orientation, and integrating academic and career planning into a FYE course. While Guided Pathways has primarily been a community college movement, these practices are relevant to any institution that wants to move the needle on student success.
