Abstract:

Developing New Tools for Advising Research: The Mathematics Attitude Scale for Academic Advisors
The Mathematics Attitude Scale for Academic Advisors (MASAA) is a new instrument designed to assess academic advisors' attitudes towards mathematics and the perception of how those attitudes influence their advising practice. This session aims to demystify the process of instrument development, encouraging advisors to engage in research by adapting or creating tools tailored to the advising field.
Using the MASAA as an example, we will examine the process of instrument development, including item selection, pilot testing, and validation. Attendees will review the instruments used to develop the MASAA, critique the MASAA, and brainstorm their own research tools. Participants will be empowered to develop research instruments that address the unique needs within academic advising, contributing to the scholarship of the advising field. |
