Abstract:
|
Academic advisors meet with students at all stages of readiness for making positives changes that will support their academic success. Grimley et al (1994) outline five stages of readiness in their transtheoretical model of behavioral change. They are precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. At each of these stages, students will exhibit different behaviors and ask different types of questions and advisors can use as cues to identify where their students are in the change making process. This model can help advisors engage in challenging conversations with their students who are in the early stages of behavioral change without overwhelming them, and it can help guide the path forward, so students are getting the support they need throughout the entire change making process. Using the transtheoretical model of behavior change helps advisor meet students where they are so that they can move forward in a positive and productive ways. |
