Abstract:
This scholarly paper is a call for academic advisors to take a critical look at student narratives as expressions of individual truths and power that can lead to better understanding of points of oppression, injustice, and marginalization as well as resistance to those forces, in our educational spaces. We center student narratives and advising dialogue as part of a larger project of critical conscious work in advising that recognizes historic and ongoing systemic inequities in U.S. higher education. We explore narrative advising theory through a socially-just academic advising lens and describe how advisors can develop and reflect upon their narrative competencies with care to better understand and validate our students' lived experiences, to support their academic paths and goals, and to affirm and amplify voices of traditionally disadvantaged and marginalized groups.
