Abstract:

FERPA-Leaks: Protecting Student Data in an Age of Freeware, Cloud Computing, & Artificial Intelligence.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. Among other protections, it limits disclosure of student records to others. "School officials" are university employees with legitimate educational interests permitted to access student records and are charged with protecting them. What are instances when university employees unwittingly expose student records to unauthorized parties? When does using third party software (freeware), "the cloud," and AI violate FERPA regulations? This session will examine ways "school officials" can protect sensitive student data while doing their job. The presenter will share some best practices in productively handling sensitive student data. |
