Title: Championing Career Advising: Creating an Action Plan for your Institution
Lead Presenter: George Steele
Date: December 31, 1969    Time: 6:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Room:
Abstract: Integration of career and academic advising is central to theoretically grounded, equity-minded, ethically informed practices. Yet, student and advisors routinely report that they rarely engage in career conversations during advising conversations. During this pre-conference, attendees will learn comprehensive strategies to achieve holistic, proactive, sustainable career advising individually and institutionally.

Attendees will begin the pre-conference by learning ways to advocate and present the case for integrated career advising at their institutions. Thereafter, presenters will introduce various career advising structures attendees can use to situate their approaches in the context of students' needs, academic programs, and institutional environments.

Hot topics related to employability, the liberal arts, guided pathways, alternative advising, career networks, corporate partnerships, and gainful employment will be examined. Pervasive misconceptions that lead to bias and impede quality decision making will be dispelled. Attendees will receive a toolkit that includes an institutional equity-audit, training schedule, programming ideas, and career advising learning outcome assessment plan. Attendees will use the information to redesign career advising strategically after participating in this dynamic session.
