Abstract:
|
Picture this: you are in a conversation with a student, and with a few seemingly harmless words or gestures, you unintentionally send a message that lands wrong leaving the student feeling excluded, unseen, or even dismissed. You have just witnessed a 'micro-message' in action. In this session, we will dive deep into the hidden world of micro-messages, decode the differences between microaggressions and microinequities, and help you sharpen your radar for subtle acts of exclusion. We will also explore the power of microaffirmations and the art of apologizing-because small actions can either damage or uplift, and knowing the difference is key. Lastly, we will practice how academic advisors and academic success guides can support students' well-being, retention, and paths to graduation using microaffirmations. |
