Abstract: Academic Advisors' Experiences with Burnout and Compassion Fatigue
Academic advisors support students through complex challenges, both academic and non-academic in nature. The supportive nature of the role of an academic advisor can result in advisors experiencing burnout and compassion fatigue. How can advisors overcome or avoid feelings of burnout and compassion fatigue? Through focused conversations with professional academic advisors, this qualitative study sheds light on the challenges faced by academic advisors and offers practical recommendations for both advisors and institutional leaders to better support academic advisors as they navigate overcoming or avoiding burnout and compassion fatigue. The findings underscore the importance of recognizing and addressing the well-being of academic advisors to enhance their effectiveness in supporting student success.
