Igniting the Flame: Advisor Resilience and Burnout Prevention
Being an advisor can be a fulfilling and rewarding experience. As with many helping professions, it can also lead to stress and fatigue. The growing demands of the advisor role and ambiguity surrounding other duties as assigned create dissatisfaction for staff and disappointment for students. Several national studies have shown the correlation between advisor retention and student persistence yet the trend nationwide of high turnover still continues to plague most institutions.
This presentation will identify common causes of advisor fatigue and offer strategies for first year and seasoned advisors to use in combating burnout. Job satisfaction research, career engagement theory, and advisor testimonials will be used to identify ways to improve retention among advisors through small meaningful morale activities and advocacy to upper administration. |
