Not Another Sticky Note! Incorporating Organizational Strategies for Advising Nirvana
Advisors are great at helping students develop organizational skills. It is also important to follow our own advice! Having a well-crafted organizational strategy to keep track of information can keep advisors effective at managing their workload throughout the year, as well as provide continuity during the onboarding of new staff or during transition times. It can alleviate stress, increase efficiencies, and potentially limit unnecessary (re)work.
The authors, representing 3 different undergraduate, Masters, and PhD programs at a Research I institution in the Midwest, present a framework and series of intertwined strategies that can be adopted at any institution or level. These strategies include developing a comprehensive communication plan for routine work, creating robust onboarding documentation, and establishing a transition plan before it is needed. |
