Abstract: Rethinking Adult Learner Success at Four-Year Higher Education Institutions

Characteristics of adult learners and success markers used by four-year higher education institutions are explored in collaboration with available research concerning three areas critical to the paper: (a) how adult learners differ from traditional learners, (b) definitions and markers used by four-year higher education institutions to measure learner success, and (c) a combination of theories, set principles, and learning model to establish the knowledge base of adult learning. Recommendations for acquiring insight into adult learners' academic characteristics and educational strategies are discussed to assist four-year higher education institutions with accurately assessing and supporting adult learner success
