Title: Helping Hands: Leveraging Resources for High Advisor Caseloads
Despite advocating for increased advising resources to mitigate high student-to-advisor ratios, we grapple with the realities of these ratios and innovate to best serve our students. Our advising center for a liberal arts and sciences college at a large public university has an extremely high student-to-advisor ratio. Peak advising times exceed our capacity whether we use a drop-in or appointment-based model. We found students booking appointments or waiting extensively just for quick questions. In response, we created a quick advising service allowing same-day connections for questions lasting 5 minutes or less utilizing peer advisors to complement our other services. This presentation outlines our strategies for managing high ratios, emphasizing the structure of our appointment and drop-in advising. Insights are provided for other offices seeking effective solutions amidst demanding advisor-to-student ratios. |
