Abstract: How to Advise Recessed or Dismissed Students?

Advising recessed or dismissed students is difficult and complex. What are the challenges that advisers encounter in working with them? Are there any strategies advisers need to have? Any underlying issues to be understood? Any performance patterns to be used as reference? Using a collective sense-making approach, we will share with participants advising cases and work together to address these questions. We will discuss the major issues that impact students' performance, including motivation, social and cultural adaptation, systemic discrimination, identity development, hidden curriculum, major choices, and personal and family challenges, and identify new guidelines and advising strategies to increase retention and success, including coaching, scaffolding, and empowering students in goal setting, problem-solving, self-advocacy, changing patterns of engagement, self-authoring, dealing with racism and oppression, and navigating other difficult terrains.
